Capoeira

On summer evenings (especially weekends) Victoria's downtown core is one long festival with events, entertainment and demonstrations such as this one I stumbled across at Bastion Square last night. The Grupo Axe Capoeira gave sidewalk cafe patrons and strollers an electrifying demonstration of this remarkable mix of music, dance and martial arts. Capoeira has an interesting history. It was developed by slaves in Brazil as a secret means of training in the martial arts while masquerading as harmless gymnastic dancing.
