I could be wrong - but I think the birds like the one in your photo are the males and the brownish-speckled ones are the females...?

I think the men are supposed to be pretty and the female birds are the ugly ones...or, well, the less attractive ones. That's usually how it works in the animal world. Weird, eh? :P Great shot nonetheless.
Thanks all for your comments. Jabba and Michaela, I used to think that the rather dowdy brownish gulls were probably the females also because that's the way it seems to be in most of the bird population. However, with seagulls, those brownish ones are the juveniles, not the females. Peterson's Field Guide to Western Birds makes no distinction between the appearance of male and female Herring Gulls.
