Autumn 2

Yesterday's photo was taken looking northwest up the Gorge. In the above photo we are looking south down the Gorge towards downtown, visible beyond the Bay Street (Point Ellice) Bridge.

Vic West

Vic West is mostly a residential neighborhood, but the range of residences is quite varied. The condos above, for instance are only a few hundred yards from the Queen Anne style house pictured yesterday. When I first saw these condos I didn't like them very much but their cheerful colors and interesting shapes have grown on me.

Selkirk Trestle 2 - Looking Southeast

Here is the view from the middle of the Selkirk Trestle looking south towards the city centre. The green area on the left is Point Ellice, with the Point Ellice (Bay Street) Bridge visible closer to the centre of the photo. On the right, just behind the trees is the Railyards condominium development with the Dockside Green development behind it.

The Railyards

Next weekend this part of Vic West is going to look very different as Bayview Place (the condo developers currently building on the property) are hosting a massive party to celebrate 100 years of history on the site with all kinds of music, food etc. See here for the official info. I have mixed feelings about all of this. Progress is inevitable but still bittersweet. - Fern

Selkirk Waters

This view is from the eastern bank of the Gorge looking towards the city and the Inner Harbour. Beyond the Bay Street or Point Ellice Bridge can be seen the condo development known as Dockside Green. The brightly colored condos on the right are called the Railyards.

Today is the annual national holiday of our southern neighbors in the United States of America and I send them my best wishes for a happy holiday.

The Railyards

I've written about the Dockside Green development several times. It occupies the western shoreline of the Gorge between the Johnson Street Bridge and the Bay Street Bridge. The shoreline between the Bay Street Bridge and the Selkirk Trestle is occupied by the development pictured above, The Railyards. It makes no pretensions to being green, and for a long time I didn't like its style much - corrugated metal siding just looks cheap to me. However, over time I've grown to like it a bit more. For those interested in prices, a two bedroom condo here will cost about $450,000. They also have one bedroom apartments and bachelor suites down to about $300,000 though I think the latter are all sold. The Galloping Goose Regional Trail passes in front of both Dockside Green and The Railyards as it follows the Gorge out of downtown.
