An Iceberg?

Down at Point Hope Shipyard there are several large ships that are wrapped in this white plastic and they rise up above everything looking, yes a little like icebergs. - Fern

Construction Zone

In my neighbourhood and in fact, all over the city there is always new buildings going up so there are cranes, and fences and these work sites that are everywhere. I walked all around such a site yesterday looking to see if there were any photo possibilities and actually found it quite an interesting project. It was a dreary day and suited the feel of this pictures. - Fern

A Fresh Start

Yesterday finished off 2016 with bright sunshine but we woke up this morning to snow on the ground. Not much but enough to get me up and outside to take some pictures. This encapsulates for me the idea of a clean slate; a new beginning. Hope you all feel ready for another year. Cheers, Fern

Homeward Bound

It was an act of real discipline to go out on the deck yesterday to snap a few hurried pictures before my hands froze. It is always beautiful sailing through the gulf islands, no matter what the weather. - Fern

After the Melt

Victoria had an exciting week of snowy weather but it wasn't until today that I had time to go for a walk and sadly the beautiful blanket of white is all gone. Most of the year this house with it's steepled roof is almost completely invisible behind a screen of trees but with the leaves all gone, it reappears looking a little spooky. - Fern

Long Neck

Here's another from our walk at Killarney Lake earlier this week. I just couldn't help but see this tree with it's roots sprawling out like this as a reclining figure; a tree man who just took a seat for a moment and then never got up again. - Fern

Downtown On A Rainy Night

Lately I seem to be downtown more often in the evening and it's really one of my favorite times to take pictures of the lights at night. Especially if it's just rained and there are lots of reflections on slick streets. Usually these tables outside of Starbucks are full all the time but everyone scatters when it gets wet. - Fern

Happy Birthday Benjamin!

Today is a special day in Victoria as Benjamin is celebrating another pass around the sun and another year of providing excellent coverage of the daily goings on about town. Hats off sir! Much love and best wishes for many more. xoxo Fern

Eternal/Fleeting

Oh so quickly it's that time of the year when you see the long lines of geese flying overheard signifying the change of season is again upon us. - Fern

Howe Sound

Here's another one from our trip off the island recently. This is looking north from the ferry just before it docked at Horseshoe Bay, north of Vancouver. - Fern

Welcome Aboard

We recently took a trip into the Cariboo and of course that means leaving the island via BC Ferries. On a sunny afternoon it's quite nice to go out onto the deck and for the younger crowd, run around. - Fern

On the Periphery

This little shack is like most of it's kind; tucked away behind a strip mall, in a vacant lot. It's original purpose has been long ago forgotten and time, blackberries and graffiti artists have their way with it. - Fern

Dusk

The days are getting shorter (sigh...) but the light is so beautiful at the end of these hot August days that it's okay. - Fern

Keeping An Eye On Things....

We took an evening stroll and as we passed the City's Public Works Yard I had this feeling of being watched. Sure enough, looking out an upstairs window was the most curious sight. I'm not sure why or how this fellow got there but it was a surprise. - Fern

Swimming Hole

This is my new favorite spot, Killarney Lake. It is a beautiful little lake up arounf Hartland Road area. It seems to be a hang-out for eagles in particular with 3 or 4 sitting in the near-by trees or swooping down for a drink. Of course I didn't bring the right lenses to capture them in pictures but next time for sure. - Fern

Country Life

On the way to our favorite swimming hole we passed this beautiful horse grazing in the field and it was just so dream-like I almost wasn't sure it was real. - Fern

My Pick

Benjamin picked the beautiful red car (that is how much I pay attention to these things) but I do love this one; the rich patina of rust and weathered paint is just perfect in my opinion. - Fern

Point Hope Shipyard

           Happy Fathers Day!!!

Last Sunday I got to do something that I've always wanted to do. It was the 2nd annual Vic West Street Fest (different from Vic West Fest in May, yes we have TWO neighbourhood events now!) and it's held on Harbour Road in conjunction with Dockside Green and Point Hope Shipyard. There's the usual food trucks, music etc. but for me the highlight was to get to explore the shipyard and the docks as the rest of the year it's off limits to the public. The above picture was taken on board a tugboat that we took a tour of. I've always admired these little boats when you see them powering along with some enormous barge or boat behind them; something so poetic about their small size and incredible power. - Fern

Stripes

When the sun is shining so brightly overhead, the shadows become so deep and cool. - Fern
