Craigdarroch Castle III

One of the things that makes a visit to Craigdarroch Castle a pleasure is the way so many of the rooms have been furnished with period items and real attention to detail. Viewing these rooms is like a peek into the family life of an upper class family a hundred years ago. Above is the dining room table set for breakfast. Note the baby's high chair down at the far end. I am mystified by the odd-shaped item on the table that is pictured to the left. Does anyone know what that thing is? Below is another table laden with snacks and munchies up in the billiard room on the top floor.

Beacon Drive-In

What are all these people lining up for? Is the food really that good? Anyone who grew up here will recognize this Victorian institution, the Beacon Drive-in, and today is the 50th anniversary of their opening. Food vendors are not allowed in Beacon Hill Park across the road and this place is the nearest fast food available. And yes, if you like burgers, fries, shakes and cones, it's good. I often stop here for a quick snack when I'm cycling around Victoria. Great chips! And you can't beat today's special anniversary prices. I had fries and a small shake today for $2. I had to take a picture of this menu since I haven't seen prices like these for about 50 years.

Luncheon Date

On the wharf directly below Bastion Square is a stand that sells delicious french fries and seafood (Red Fish Blue Fish). While I waited for my chips to be cooked this gull kept me company - not, I suspect, for my sparkling personality, but in hopes of sharing some of my meal. When he saw there were only chips on my plate, however, he uttered one dismal squawk and flew off in disgust.
