Weather

We've been having a lot of weather lately and a lot of skies like the one above. Sometimes it'll be overcast then the sun will break through then it will rain then the sky will clear again and the sun will come out. It'll be autumn cold one day then summery and warm the next. I'm not complaining - it could be earthquakes and tornadoes and though the rain is hard on cameras, it's good for the forests.

Powder-puff Clouds

Yesterday just as I was leaving the West Bay Walkway I turned back and saw this view towards the West Bay Marina. Actually it was the clouds that caught my attention. Those soft, fluffy, cotton-batting clouds always make me think of warm winds and summer days even though the temperature was hovering around freezing.

The Everything Photo

I have a bad photography habit that I am trying to curb - I usually try to get everything into one shot, as in the photo above. Note the nifty period lamp and the hanging flower baskets, the Legislative Assembly Buildings, the Inner Harbour Lower Causeway, The Inner Harbour crowded with the boats of the currently running Classic Boat Show. And those are just the main items - there's other things there to distract your attention too. I suspect this habit harks back to the days of film when taking photos was an expensive activity and one naturally strove to get as much into each photo as possible. I've made rules for myself such as there should only be a single subject for each photo, and I try to follow them. But still when I come home from a day's photography I always find at least a few of the "everything" photo. It's a hard habit to break.

Signs of Summer

When the city breaks out the hanging flower baskets it's a sure sign that summer's here and these manage to look bright and cheerful even under Saturday's dramatically gloomy skies. Those great black clouds were all bluff though; not a drop of rain did they deliver here.

Clouds

Our weather has been all over the place lately, heavy rains, cold, cloudy, windy, clear and sunshiney, all in the last few days. Perhaps that explains the wild variety of clouds over the city in this photo taken from the West Bay Walkway.

Cloudwatchers

Fern wasn't the only person watching Saturday afternoon's dramatic cloud show after the rainy morning. Comfortably seated on the convenient mushroom lamps, this pair also enjoyed the show on the Inner Harbour Causeway.

Magic

Isn't this a nice effect? I bought the mirror in fact, I see in it's depths a whole series of photos.... - Fern

Stormy Weather

Victoria has been having some stormy weather of late and while I haven't been lucky enough to get a shot of all the recent lightening, I did witness some amazing 'skyscapes' as the sun was coming up. - Fern

Natures Ever Changing Canvas

The sky is so often an amazing collage of colour and form. This is Banfield Park in Vic West where we like to go for walks, and I love this stand of shaggy cedars, they represent quintessential 'west coast' to me. - Fern

White Rock, BC - From the Pier

White Rock pier, BC, CanadaHere is a photo of the town of White Rock showing how it is perched above the Pacific shore. The photo is taken from the White Rock pier. Photographers are perhaps more aware than most that fully half of our landscape is the sky and its most prominent features are the clouds. Their colors, sizes, shapes and patterns add infinite and ever changing variety to scenes we see every day. I love the clouds in this photo.
