Esquimalt Lagoon

Yesterday's photo of the lighthouse was taken from the eastern end of Esquimalt Lagoon looking eastward. From the same spot here is the view looking west down the length of the lagoon.

Fisgard Lighthouse

I went out to Esquimalt Lagoon on Wednesday to see if there were any interesting birds passing through on their way to their northern nesting grounds. There were lots of Northern Pintail Ducks and Mallards but nothing unusual so I contented myself with a few photos of my favorite model, the Fisgard Lighthouse, since it is visible from the lagoon. From this perspective it almost looks landlocked - that's because of the telephoto compression that makes the naval base on the other side of the harbor entrance seem so close.

Salmon Spawning in Goldstream River

Nearly every year I go out to Goldstream Provincial Park to see its famous salmon run and, generally, I am too early or too late. I usually see only a few salmon struggling upstream but not the legendary "run" when the fish are so solidly packed in the river you can walk across on their backs. Not, at least until this year. Fern and I were out there a week or so ago and the shallow river was full of large salmon. The photo above will give you a little idea but to really experience how many fish there were take a look at the video below. The chattering children in the background testify that this is a favorite field trip for school children at this time of year. It truly is an amazing spectacle and if you ever have the opportunity to see it, don't hesitate.

Perspective

Photography is often as much about what you edit out than what you focus in on, as with these two photos. After a trip through the jammed packed aisles of our local big box store, I stood in wonder looking out from the edge of the parking lot enjoying the very crisp and serene winter sunset over the Sooke Hills and happy to forget the traffic and hustle bustle behind me. However, showing only the above picture creates a false sense of what is going on around me doesn't it? Interesting to contemplate. - Fern

Luxton Fair, Langford

The May long weekend marks the beginning of a summer tradition, the fair. And nothing says the fair quite like the ferris wheel. - Fern
