Optical Illusions

What do you see in this photograph, holes or bumps? So far, everyone I've asked says 'bumps' but in fact they are holes. On this part of the coast there are areas where the rocky shoreline includes some wild rock formations and I found these on Galiano Island. I am not sure what their proper name is however. Anyone? - Fern

  1. Very impressive illusion. When I first looked at it there were holes. That soon changed to bumps.

  2. I've heard of these on Galiano, but never got to see them yet.
There are also a great many on Hornby Island at Tribune Bay and Ford's Cove which I have photographed quite a bit.
The natural organic textures are very cool, almost "brain-like". I'm not sure what causes them or what they're called. It may be an erosion process.

  3. I think somewhere along the line I've heard of that, but I can't recall now. It definitely does have an illusion thing going on!

  4. Looked like holes to me. There's a beach in Marin County in the town of Bolinas where all the stones have holes in them.
