Youth and Age

On the left is me, last Sunday, as seen by caricature artist, Dean Lewis, on the Inner Harbour Causeway. On the right is me 52 years ago as seen by an unknown artist at the Pacific National Exhibition in Vancouver.

Although I'm a photographer I don't like photographs of myself because I always seem to have a gloomy, even grim, expression on my face and I don't generally feel like that inside. I like Dean's caricature because for once I actually look a little bit more like I usually feel.

Below is a shot of Dean at work on my physiognomy, always an interesting enough process to capture a few curious spectators. If you're down on the Inner Harbour in Victoria, stop and say Hello to Dean and if you want an interesting portrait, sit down and let him draw you. You won't regret it. Thanks, Dean.

Wow what an AWESOME job!!! I bet I've even seen Dean down there, working his magic. Next time I'm up there I will definitely say HI!

That is great! I love it....I especially LOVE the picture you grabbed of the onlookers!! The expressions are PRICELESS!

No, thankYOU Benjamin. We had a lot of fun doing that. I love how you were capturing the experience by camera at the same time.
The onlookers are something I seldom get to see and just guessing at their perceptions is fun for me. One of my favourite reactions once in awhile is little kids who will watch for a few minutes and then ask 'Who are you drawing?' LOL
The fifties era pic has that distinctive conte-crayony feel which was around for a long time.

Good one Dean. You sure seem to know what you are doing. Benjamin looks very cool here.

YAY! We've been WONDERING what you look like! Do you really have a 'Victoria Daily Photo' hat??
Any time we're out and see a guy with a camera, we always wonder if it's you. Now we'll know for sure.

For the record, Benjamin looks much better than my depiction of him, as does most everyone. It is a caricature after all, and I depend very much on their fundamental wider 'margin of error'.
Have to say it was great to be able to give back one picture to Benjamin after being the grateful recipient/viewer of so many of his wonderful offerings here.

Aw, shucks

Jabba - unfortunately I don't have a cap that says Victoria Daily Photo - but it's a good idea - maybe it would mean I could get a little closer to some official events as a member of the "citizen's media"....

Great caricature and great photo! I think Dean is BY FAR the best portrait/caricature artist on the causeway. He puts time and care into every sketch he does, and he really manages to capture the fun energy in everyone.

Well deserved on both fronts! Great job Dean. And Benjamin.
