Royal Roads

If you were looking at yesterday's scene and turned 180 degrees you would see the scene pictured above. This is the Royal Roads anchorage, so called because it lies between Albert Head and Victoria, both named after members of the British royal family. I believe those large ships lying offshore are waiting for a chance to visit the Esquimalt graving docks that are capable of servicing such enormous craft. The cairn and plaque pictured below give a little history of Royal Roads.

    Hi: Vessels are coal ships and waiting berths in North Vancouver or Roberts Bank.

    An incident like that one would be worthy of commemorating. The sea can be unforgiving.

    @SPI: Thanks for that information - I just assumed that since the graving docks are so close they were waiting for that. It seems an odd place to wait for docking at Roberts Bank or North Van - not exactly close.

    @JoJo: maybe in the summer but that wind that was blowing was cold - brrrr!

    @William - almost every stretch of coast here has some wreck story attached to it. It's a hard coast.
