Steller's Jay

Here's a bird I have been hoping to see for some time. Once again, although this Steller's Jay (Cyanocitta stelleri) is not a rare bird it is the first time I have seen any. I encountered quite a group of them, maybe ten or fifteen, foraging in some Garry Oaks at Fort Rodd Hill. They move around in the trees quite quickly and it was some time before I was able to get a clear shot.

    My yard at my old house in WA was full of them. Beautiful birds aren't they? I used to put Indian corn on my front door each fall and they'd pick it so much that it sounded like someone was knocking and my dogs would go crazy so I had to stop using corn. On the east coast we have the smaller blue jay.

    Aka a 'BC blue jay' even though they aren't true blue jays.

    They do seem to appear in waves... we had some at our bird feeders a few years ago, but then they disappeared for awhile.

    Recently I've seen them locally on Christmas Hill.

    This past summer we camped at the north end of the island and they were everywhere.

    I love Stellar Jays! I saw one on my walkabout on Sunday, but by the time I got the camera out and set up, he was gone.
