Yellow-rumped Warbler

It's always a red-letter day for me when I can identify a species of bird that is new to me so I am happy to share with you these photos of a Yellow-rumped Warbler (Setophaga coronata). I saw at least a half-dozen of these out at Swan Lake the other day. It was a good day for birding though not for photography since most of the birds I saw were too distant to photograph well. They included Bald Eagles (a pair), a hawk (I don't know what kind it was), Red-winged Blackbirds (tuning up their rich whistles for the spring mating season), Spotted Towhees, wrens and sparrows, ducks and geese and several other small birds I couldn't identify.

  3. I live a block from the lake so our feeders get lots of relatively 'exotic' birds that I've periodically featured in my own blog.

Re: eagles. About a month ago we were witness to one of those 'can't look away' situations when an eagle grabbed a seagull out of the air and proceeded to pluck it and eat it in a neighbour's tree while it was still flopping about.

Re: songbirds. A lot of songbirds around Swan Lake are being decimated by domestic cats. A couple of years ago the TC reported that one species of ground bird in the area had been hunted out of existence.

Nature has a way of getting even though -- we also have a lot of missing cat posters in our neighbourhood and I suspect more than a few have wound up as a meal for the big eagles that fly over the lake.

  4. The top shot really demonstrates how the background bokah produces a 3-D effect.
