Belted Kingfisher (Megaceryle alcyon)

To complete this week's roundup of recent bird sightings, here is a Belted Kingfisher (Megaceryle alcyon) perched overlooking Lime Bay near Spinnakers Brewpub on the Westsong Walkway.

  1. Nice! - they're a difficult bird to capture on camera.

  2. Thank you for a wonderful week of bird photos, Benjamin. You must be getting more stealthful at sneaking up on these guys.
I learned recently the Kingfisher is in the same family as the Kookaburra. The resemblance is certainly there, including it's 'loud high rattle' call you mentioned in a photo from last year.
BTW, in the news yesterday is a story about dozens of migrating Snowy Owls camping on an island near Burnaby.

  4. Really enjoyed your bird pictures this week. The Harlequins are spectacular ducks, in fact they were all great captures, especially the Northern Flicker. Thanks for posting them.
