Gotcha!
I see these Great Blue Herons catching their food almost every day and I am always impressed by how seldom they miss. When they make that stab into the water they usually come up with something wriggling. However, until recently I haven't had a camera that could capture video as well as still photos. The Sony a55 I am now using does both. If you want to watch a Great Blue Heron catching his breakfast in High Definition video, the clip below is only 20 seconds long. Often the waiting and watching is five or ten minutes of concentrated immobility.

Great action 'freeze'!
ReplyDeleteWas the top still a portion of a video or just great timing?
Maybe one in a sequence of quick multi-shots ..? Like the old motor-drives ..
Hi Dean - your second guess - one of a series of fast shots. I actually shot the video a few days later in order to show some actual catching of fish.
ReplyDeleteThanks also for your recent update on Roger - I'm still planning to get down there at dawn sometime this summer. Here's a link to my shot of the yellowbelly, taken last year: http://victoriadailyphoto.blogspot.com/2010/06/yellow-bellied-marmot-marmota.html
Apparently Roger is out and about at any time of day, getting tamer as snacks are offered him.
ReplyDeleteA fence was put up at one end of his 'domain' to keep tourists away from the beehives in place, but you can walk down closer to the rocks and shrubs where he is most of the time.
Good action shot...

This guy (gal?) peering intently at something in the water, Swan Lake, last week.
Nice capture --- I like the water droplets frozen mid-air. We were thinking the same today with our photos!
