New Maltby Trompe l'Oeil
I must first thank regular visitor and commenter here, Dean Lewis, for alerting me to a new work by local muralist, Jeff Maltby. I have featured some of his remarkable trompe l'oeil in the past where it is located in Chinatown. Above is one panel of a new Maltby triptych that graces the wall of the Siam Restaurant near the corner of Fort and Langley Streets in downtown Victoria. Below is a wider shot showing all three panels. Victoria is lucky to have an artist so talented and to have patrons intelligent and generous enough to sponsor such works and share them with the public. They are a delight to the eye and I can only hope that ever more of Victoria's walls will be so beautifully and interestingly decorated in future.

I knew these looked new when I was there!!!! I spotted them during the Ghostly Walks tour because of the lights around the "windows". I meant to make it back down there the next day to shoot them but was unable to fit it into my tight schedule.
ReplyDeleteJoJo - you're more alert than I am - if Dean hadn't told me about these I would still be ignorant of their existence.
ReplyDeleteI guess I was seeing Victoria through the 'fresh' eyes of a tourist, that's why they jumped out at me. I kept saying to myself, "how did I never notice these before? why don't I have pics of them?"
ReplyDeleteThis artwork and others by the same artist are superb complements to Victoria's downtown. It's a bit slower to be discovered because of being at an intersection where mostly foot pedestrians will find it, and the main car traffic doesn't face it heading east on Fort street.
ReplyDeleteThis was just one large blank canvass until the owner decided to let loose the muralist. It sure helps explain the motivation behind graffitti artists wanting to contribute to some 'humanization' of the cold glass and concrete of what is usually considered a city's heart.
I'd like to see a book put together of all of Victoria's downtown murals. The 'faux-windows' ones add fun as much as aesthetic appeal.
This is amazing, I like it very much!
ReplyDeleteHow incredible! I love trompe l'oeil but have never seen anything as imaginative and such fun as this. Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteFabulous! Love his work.
