Pre-Tick-Tock

I found this lovely old sun dial yesterday afternoon in Beacon Hill Park. Who can tell me what time it was when I took this photo? (No prize but I will put a gold star beside your name in my private records if you give me a correct answer. Wrong answers will get a silver star. Non-participants all get bronze.) Bonne chance!

  1. I'm going to go with 5:30 pm. under the assumption that this may be a clock not corrected for daylight savings time. I want an ice-cream cone if correct.
Ever seen the large-scale, standing shadow-casting sundial by Ogden Point Cafe ?
Guess on all our cloudy winter days, time stands still.

  2. 4:30 Pacific Standard Time, 5:30 Pacific Daylight Time?

  3. Dean Lewis gets the gold on this one for correcting for Daylight Savings Time. Runner-up JoJo gets the Honorable Mention Gold for agreeing with Dean. Sharing the podium with them is Heather, who gets the Silver Medal for her non-daylight adjusted guess. She is correct too if you don't agree with Daylight Savings Time (and many people don't - it's just another of these new-fangled fads.) All the rest of you are awarded Bronze merely for dropping by. You win here even if you don't participate.

  6. In reference to Dean's comment - the sundial at Ogden Point is off by about half an hour! Fun post and contest!

  7. Quillside - it's never too late and you get a bronze and my thanks for your entry.

Dave, one of the things that inspired me to post this photo was how surprisingly accurate this dial was - I checked the EXIF data from the photos and they were taken at 5:31 pm and 5:33 pm respectively and given that the dial shows about 4:29 (5:29) it seems a higher level of accuracy than I had expected. I suspect the accuracy depends very much on how well the dial is oriented astronomically. (I'll have to go and check the Ogden Point dial now.)
