Victoria is a beautiful city but not all of its residents enjoy it equally. In the shadows or on the sidelines, there are always those less fortunate such as the panhandler above or the shopping cart person below.
In Chancery Lane, below, a homeless person rests within a few meters of the lamplit sidewalk restaurants and bars of Bastion Square.
I've visited Victoria once, whilst visiting family who live in Vancouver.

It is same in Funabashi.

And notice how they try to blend in - or maybe we just don't notice?
ReplyDeleteThis is also an issue in Knoxville. Our homeless are the invisible people who, for various reasons in their lives, live in between the cracks of society. many are mentally ill, but are turned away from treatment centers, which I think is outrageous and shameful for one of the most prosperous countries in the world.

Dina, there are shelters and some assistance is available but not enough. Also, as knoxville girl says, many of the homeless here are people who have been ejected from institutions into non-existent "community care".
ReplyDeleteThey are easy to ignore and most people simply do ignore them.
It is certainly cold for them here in the winter though Victoria is the warmest place in Canada.
