John Gao

Not all of the city's Chinese heritage is in Chinatown. Today's photo is of busker John Gao who plays traditional Chinese instruments, dizi and erhu (flute and violin), and provides contemporary western as well as Chinese music on the Inner Harbour Causeway.

  1. Instrumental terms I wouldn't be familiar with- given what we see here, rather different from a conventional violin.

  2. Featured this same guy in my now retired previous blog. He had some interesting stories about how he came to live in Victoria from back east...

  3. John was kind enough to give me a lovely CD, "Romance of Bamboo and Silk II. It's wonderful and captivating. There is a link (to perhaps his son?) georgegao.com who arranged the music played by John.
