Expert Victorian author Ross Crockford describes this mural as "appalling" and quotes another source who suggests this may "very well be the worst mural in Canada, perhaps even in the world." Please click on it for the LARGE picture in order to enjoy many of its splendid details. I am particularly fond of the mountain lion's expression as he eyes the juicy young violinist. As our Willits correspondent would say, now that we've discussed the elephant in the room we can move on to more important things.

ReplyDeleteThat is an unattractive mural. There. That was cathartic. Well, a little anyway - hate to critique the works of the, possibly, living too harshly, but I have just scratched the, uh, surface of the murals on view in Willits. Maybe that explains why I like those plain walls so much.
Well, I'll be diplomatic and say it's all in the eye of the beholder. You know, the writer Guy de Maupassant called the Eiffel Tower a "metal carcass" and left Paris so he wouldn't have to look at it anymore. Of course, most people say "Guy who?" But I digress. Thanks for showing us this...unique...mural. : )

ReplyDeleteThese comments touch on some interesting and profound questions - what is art and what is not? If there is "good" art, then logically there must be "bad" art. What's an appropriate response to bad art? How do we ever improve if everyone is supposed to like everything. Do we want to improve or do we just want praise, however faint? It might be interesting to explore these ideas in the CDPB forum.
